Il Darwin Year in Italia

2009 marked an exceptional moment for scientific culture in Italy, thanks to the celebrations for the bicentenary of the birth of Charles Darwin and the 150th anniversary of the publication of The Origin of Species. The article traces the richness and variety of Italian initiatives organized on the occasion of Darwin Year, highlighting not only the surprising participation of the public, but also the cultural and scientific depth of the proposals. Exhibitions, conferences, theatrical performances and educational activities have offered spaces for reflection on three fundamental aspects: the complexity of Darwin's scientific journey, the relevance of his ideas for the understanding of man and his place in nature, and the legacy of the theory of evolution in the light of contemporary discoveries. The Italian Darwin Year experience has thus refuted the stereotype of a weak scientific culture, instead showing a widespread interest in themes that intertwine science, ethics, education and communication.
