Abstract
In Italy households and businesses, especially smaller ones, benefit heavily from the loans of Cooperative credit banks, due to their territorial roots, which makes them «proximity banks», with all the prerogatives but also the difficulties related to this status. The analysis aims to highlight the weight of Bccs within the Italian banking sector in financing households and businesses, depending on the type and size of the subjects financed and the sectors of economic activity. A significant picture emerges of the complementarity between banks of different sizes and operational approaches, in a developed and mature financial industry. This situation is also supported by a demand for banking services reflecting the need for a strong neighbourhood relationship.
