Abstract

In “Marzo 1821”, with the adynaton of the rivers, Manzoni hints that he is sure of the success of the unitary Risorgimento process. To his ardent conscience the course of history looks as irreversible as a law of nature. Thus the Risorgimento stands for the eschatology of the Country, where the formation of the national identity will follow the process of territorial and political unification of the Peninsula. The well-known couplet of the identity factors is not to be seen as the petition for an unquestionable heritage, but as a goal to achieve at the same rate with the attainment of Independence and Unity.
