Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] The essay examines the developments in the teaching of physical education in Italian primary schools during the first half of the twentieth century. The objective of the research - to understand which conceptions of the body inspired physical education in that historical context - is pursued through the analysis of printed sources, and in particular of ministerial programs and some of the most relevant manuals for use by teachers. The contents of this documentary material, framed in the more general changes of the political-scholastic scenario and of the pedagogical discourse of the time, give an account not only of the purposes towards which the motor exercises were oriented, but also and above all of the methodologies that had to inform their teaching . The essay, without abandoning the traditional interpretations of scholastic historiography, explores one of the most recent interests of sector research, namely the double meaning - material and metaphorical - which is attributed to the body. The first results achieved by this contribution can indicate a stimulating starting point for documenting how much importance was attributed to the objective dimension of the body, to be regulated in a functionalistic way, and to the subjective one, capable of enhancing its expressiveness.
