Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] In the autumn of 2013 the city of Milan hosted some exhibitions dedicated to the post-war American art. At the same time, the Gallerie d'Italia presented 1963 and its surroundings, a monographic study dedicated to 1963, a year which represented an important junction in Italian artistic events, in dialogue with the international panorama. Starting from the historical-critical themes useful to frame that period, with a focus on the spread of American art and the many aspects of the confrontation taking place in the early 1960s, a conference was organized, promoted and hosted jointly by the Museo del Novecento and by Gallerie Italy. The theme of the study day Italian art 1960-1964. Cultural identity, international comparisons, American models, coordinated by Flavio Fergonzi and Francesco Tedeschi, is the origin of the studies that are published in this volume. Shared by the desire to investigate the period with historical awareness and philological attention, overcoming manualistic or sedimented approaches, the contributions collected here are divided into two sections. The first is dedicated to individual personalities, Lucio Fontana, Piero Manzoni, Giulio Paolini, Franco Angeli, Luciano Fabro, Cesare Vivaldi and the international experience of Costantino Nivola and Mirko Basaldella. The second session, on the other hand, offers a plurality of views on the critical debate of the early 1960s, highlighting the positions of different generations of critics, from Giulio Carlo Argan to Carla Lonzi, as well as the comparison between Pop Art and the experiments related to programmed art, dialogue that saw the direct involvement of many artists. The intent of this publication is to provide study materials and stimuli to deepen research on Italian art of the sixties, for its specificity and in an open exchange with international experiences.
