Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The Second Vatican Council, placed not only chronologically in the middle of the twentieth century, was provoked (the verb is by Paul VI), almost motivated by those questions that the reflection on man and his history had accumulated in the first part of the century, and has thus become a crossroads of contemporary humanism. What were the elements of modern culture that most influenced the debates of the Council fathers? What were the results and the influences that the documents and the conciliar deliberations exercised in the field of academic studies and artistic production? The volume collects the contributions presented on the occasion of the Study Conference "The Second Vatican Council and contemporary humanism", promoted in the spring of 2014 by the Faculty of Letters and Philosophy of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart of Milan and dedicated to the problematic node represented from the relationship between the humanities and the conciliar message, starting from the assumption that still today, and perhaps even tomorrow, history and philosophy will continue to pose questions that pertain profoundly to the practical life of man, and therefore continually challenge the Church and the Church his mission in the world; that still today, and perhaps even tomorrow, literature and the arts will provide an indispensable and insuperable knowledge of the nature of man, because they declare greatness and misery, aspirations and disappointments, dreams and reality, that is to say they reveal the deepest spirit.
