[Autom. eng. transl.] The "decisive criterion of distinction between Islam and disbelief" is a legal text in which Abu Hamid al-Ghazali is concerned to clarify in which cases the accusation of disbelief (takfir) is triggered. First of all, the work is placed in the historical, political and cultural context of reference, in order to define what role the theme of unbelief played in the Islamic world of the time; secondly, it highlights - through the analysis of the main aspects of the theory illustrated by the author - how its purpose was to establish a criterion of distinction between Islām and unbelief, both rigorous and tolerant. This criterion had to be able to combat the spirit of intransigence and exclusivity that characterized the disputes between the various theological and juridical schools of Islam.
