Abstract
Mario Bertolone, director of the Civic Museums of Varese, in 1953 founded the Centro di Studi Preistorici e Archeologici to promote a renewal of archaeological research from prehistory to the early Middle Ages and the Centro immediately created the magazine «Sibrium». His notoriety among scholars and his personality allowed him to cultivate relationships with researchers of national and international fame, as it emerges from the material conserved in the Archive of the Centro and from the articles published in the journal. Bertolone had an interdisciplinary view of archaeology and was among the first to understand the importance of scientific analysis on materials and the contribution that aerial photography could make. The research always associated a regular dissemination activity, paying particular attention to the younger generation.
