Abstract

Unions are nowadays facing big challenges that imply the search for greater legitimacy, efficiency and effectiveness of response to the needs of the groups represented. These challenges require a rethinking of organizational models and greater transparency. The implementation of new ways of reporting activities in order to enhance organizational accountability may be a possible answer. In this context, this research aims to analyze a phenomenon currently underway within the largest Italian Union, the CGIL, which has started a project of social reporting. The study investigates the relationship that may exist between the introduction of a new organizational practice - the Social report - and change. The article focuses on factors that affect change, from an internal and external point of view, through the conceptual lenses of Archetype Theory. This theory allows to identify variables that impact on change processes and that need to be supervised, so that the new instruments introduced become part of the organization. In particular, five agencies that have adopted the social report as a tool for reporting on their activities are examined, social reports that have been published by these agencies and other official documents that the author found useful for the study are analyzed. Through a questionnaire prepared ad hoc, and some interviews with the actors who participated in the organizational change process, it was possible, finally, to reconstruct the social reporting process started within the CGIL. The analysis suggests that the social report may be the tool to meet the need of greater accountability in Unions, but only if the introduction of this new tool is supported by (and the consequence of) a culture change process.
