Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The article deals with the unpublished diary of Paolo Mantegazza kept in the Civic Library of Monza, reconstructing the history of the manuscript and highlighting some news that enrich the author's biography. Attention then focuses on the historical testimony provided by the first volume, relating to 1848, of which the most significant passages have been transcribed and commented on, allowing us to follow the different political positions taken on by the young Mantegazza, who does not appear to be consistent in the arc of the year. It emerges that, despite being very fearful, he had a role that was anything but secondary (and the figure of his mother, Laura Solera Mantegazza was also relevant) and he knew leading figures such as Mazzini and Garibaldi.
