Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The second edition of the Manual of Hygiene Preventive Medicine and Public Health, while remaining firmly in the line traced by the long and glorious history of texts and manuals elaborated by the great Masters of the hygienic discipline that have guided and inspired our years of study and work, presents vigorously innovative aspects. The group of professors and researchers belonging to the Institute of Hygiene of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart and the prestigious group of external collaborators who have lavished energy and knowledge in the drafting of the Manual, have undertaken to integrate the important work carried out by the Conference of Deans of the Faculties of Medicine and Surgery of Italian Universities, which led to the elaboration of the current core curriculum for the training of the doctor, with the most recent impulses that the wise leadership of the University Hygiene and of the Hygiene Society Preventive Medicine and Health Public has impressed the evolution of Hygiene itself. New interests and recent strands of research and activity have therefore been included in the discussion of the discipline, without abandoning the traditional fields of study and intervention, indeed updating its contents. This second edition of the Manual thus confirms the ambition to provide the student with a secure point of reference since his first year of University, because he makes him aware that a bibliographic tool will be available to him for the duration of his studies and will allow him to to acquire knowledge in all the sectors in which modern hygiene is today. In the first edition, meticulous care has been devoted to the treatment of areas such as epidemiological and statistical methodology, health economics, epidemiology and prevention of infectious-chronic diseases, environmental and food hygiene and health Nutrition, Health Education, Hygiene in the Social Environment, Hospital Hygiene and School and Sport Hygiene, Health Planning and Organization up to Molecular Biology Applied to Public Health. In the second edition, alongside these fundamental knowledge, there are new educational proposals that keep pace with the times thanks to the close-knit work of the group of authors. Here is how to make their appearance innovative areas for teaching in medical faculties, such as HTA, HIA, Management and leadership in Healthcare, Global Health, Hospital building, or ancient but still current topics of which, however, a modern and targeted rereading is necessary, such as Ethics in Healthcare. In presenting this Manual to all those who are interested in reading it and using it, special thanks go to the Editor, who has always followed our initiatives carefully. My gratitude to professors Bruno Angelillo, Antonio Boccia and Giancarlo Vanini, masters of many masters, whose immense scientific and human wisdom has been, and will always be, a constant source of inspiration for life and work. And finally, thanks to all the professors and researchers of the Institute of Hygiene of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart and of the other universities that have contributed to the editorial effort without saving. Without their precious work, nothing would be possible in the complex interweaving of didactic, research and assistance activities that characterize our university commitment.
