Abstract

The essay examines the cosmogonic remarks in Faust I. It aims to show that Faust’s utterance «im Anfang war das Wort!» and its implied reference to the theology of light expressed in the Gospel of John do not necessarily contradict Mephistopheles’ assertion «Ich bin ein Teil des Teils, der anfangs alles war // Ein Teil der Finsternis, die sich das Licht gebar»: The two statements may refer to two different aspects of the same cosmogony, which finds an emblematic expression in Isaac Luria’s mysticism.
