Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] Through a large collection of literary, iconographic and monumental documentary sources, the survey aims to update, after more than a century from the most authoritative study, the examination of 21 couplets in hexameters that an uncertain tradition attributes to Ambrogio di Milano as captions of as many biblical scenes depicted in the Basilica Ambrosiana. The survey shows that around the year 400 AD both the Tituli genre and the use of representing biblical cycles on the walls of the basilicas are attested and, in highlighting the iconographic program of the sequence of couplets, shows that, even if it is not given to arrive at a certain positive proof, under the aspect of literary and exegetical coordinates there are substantial indications supporting Ambrosian authenticity and few contraindications.
