Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] Banks are particular economic bodies. They are not always adequately appreciated, but perform essential functions for the economy, given that they manage the exchange of funds and feed the supply of credit thanks to the collection of savings and, through the production of money, assist and facilitate the economic subjects in the decisions of investment. They are companies that act as economic entities in a competitive but highly regulated market; they are institutions by virtue of the systemic correlations and the externalities that their action produces at the aggregate level. The banks, despite their nature as private companies, have a public value and interest. However, the banks operate in a dynamic balance that requires certain conditions to be met in order to avoid disruption - as demonstrated by the periodic manifestation of corporate and systemic crises due to the risks incurred and managed. The present volume proposes a micro and macroeconomic understanding of the behavior of these strange organisms, explaining the nature of banks as financial intermediaries in light of the historical evolution of their particularly complex operations. The analysis deals with both the market and systemic context in which the bank's action is located, subject to monetary policy interventions and public constraints, both the micro-economic functioning of the intermediary and the management problems relating to the various activities carried out.
