Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] The article studies, with reference to a wide survey carried out by numerous Italian universities and by the Ecole Française de Rome, the development of Marian shrines between the Middle Ages and the early modern age. It also analyzes the way in which the sacred is explained by Carlo Borromeo, that for the laity privileged the use of the sense of sight over touch, leaving to the priestly world the acquisition of the sacred through the tactile sense, the touch.
