Abstract

The events that led to the proclamation of the holy patrons of Italy are strongly linked with the political situation of Italy in the fascist period. The Holy See pointed out Francis of Assisi and Catherine of Siena (proclaimed Patrons of Italy by Pope Pius XII in 1939) to better define the boundaries of religious identity in order. In this way the Holy See tried to foster the commitment of the laity of the Third Franciscan and Dominican Orders in the Church and in the social life
