Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] When we move within an unknown place, we often use maps that represent in a simplified way the territory on which we are moving. A map, in fact, allows us to orient ourselves through the identification of some essential elements of the surrounding environment, helping us to understand its configuration. Even the study of a socio-economic system can sometimes benefit from a simplified representation, which contains its fundamental components abstracted from the particular context, in order to analyze its functioning and evolution. To do this, the social sciences resort to the construction of formal models, that is, abstract representations in logical or mathematical form of the behavior of a social system.
