Abstract
Aim of my contribution is to delve into the origins of the notion of apparatus in Wilhelmine Germany, starting from the writings on film of different authors of the period, like philosopher Raphael Seligmann, scientist Ernst Mach, psychologist Karl Marbe, journalist Friedrich Huth and art critic Otto August Lux. Key concept reveals to be the concept of projection, variously considered as a symbolic, empathetic, prosthetic definition of our technical view of the world in the age of cinema.
