Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] Recent developments in economic systems have marked important changes in consumption and production dynamics, highlighting the importance of innovation. Among the factors that, at different levels, can support innovation there are also the so-called "places of innovation", that is those physical spaces, such as incubators, co-working, but also informal collaborative spaces (eg. libraries, bars and bookshops), where people can meet to exchange ideas, learn from each other and collaborate. These spaces can be an important multiplier of the cognitive, human and social heritage present in a territory, as they offer opportunities to experiment and develop technologies, services and business models that at the same time benefit from the direct participation of citizens within a collaborative framework and generate new solutions to community problems. In other words, they can contribute to developing a particular "creative atmosphere" in a territory that can benefit all actors (individuals, more or less formal groups, organizations, etc.) who work there. Recently there has been a real proliferation of spaces of this type, which are considered crucial to support local innovation and the ability to connect with other nodes outside the territory. If these premises are shared, a systematic analysis of the organizational variables that can influence their effectiveness is still lacking. In this sense, this article aims to offer a reflection on the organizational characteristics of the places of innovation, with the aim of understanding the available levers of both policy makers and management subjects to increase their effectiveness, impact and sustainability.
