Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The so-called "monster girls" of Japanese anime and manga production, born in some of the heroes' subgenres (a movement that combines grotesque, eroticism and nonsense), have been experiencing global diffusion in recent years, sometimes coming to oust much more mainstream manga in the rankings of the most sold products. A reflection on the change that these figures have undergone can introduce different notions of "limit": the exceeded limit (typical of the Japanese tradition) between human and non-human; the continually negotiated limit between what, in different contexts, is considered lawful or illicit; the tension towards the (unattainable) limit of an explicit sexual relationship, to which these products continually allude but never concretize it, from which also follows the limit between ecchi and hentai images, roughly corresponding to "erotic" and "pornographic". Alongside a general overview of the phenomenon, the analysis of some of Monster Musume's characters is proposed as a specific case study: Everyday Life with Monster Girls (Monsutā Musume no Iru Nichijō, 2012 - in progress), to reconstruct the evolution figurative from creatures of folklore to disturbing freaks and finally to sexy icons of a comedy product suitable for a wider global audience. The specific case can be useful to define some points of interest around the general limits between erotic and pornographic images, and between Eastern and Western approaches to the topic.
