Abstract
In the complex events related to the confrontation between Frederick II and the papacy emerged the profound crisis that struck the Order of the Lesser Brothers since 1239, the year of the deposition of Friar Elijah of Assisi (or from Cortona). The tasks entrusted by the pope to the friars indeed entailed a serious identity crisis, which sought a justification in the prophecies linked to the final struggle between the Antichrist and the Church.
