Abstract

In the perspective of the clash of civilizations, the Middle East has been identified with Islam. This has led to a lack of attention towards the Eastern Christian communities. Over the past two centuries these communities have played an important role in the modernization of the Ottoman Empire, but also have an ambiguous relationship with Europe. Privileged partners of the Europeans, they have been forcibly identified with the West, becoming "foreign" in their homeland. It was this situation that caused the crisis that led to the drastic decrease of Christians in those regions.
