Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The Cistercians are considered the first religious order in history. The historiography of the last two centuries has highlighted how this monastic network has been a pioneering model not only in the ecclesiastical sphere, but also for the lay world. The volume takes into consideration the first 150 years of the order's history by analyzing its most original and innovative aspects: its origins, economy, mobility, the female component, attitude towards the future, horizontal relationships between communities. An experience in which the ideal dimension deeply penetrated the real one and in which there was a constant search for an immanent order all leaning towards the future and aimed at stemming the crisis and the decline inherent in everything.
