Abstract
The volume collects 14 essays on the contribution of Catholics to the development of the Italian economy from the post-war period to the new millennium. The first section analyses the role of the significant catholic politicians and economists in economic policymaking, from the post-war reconstruction (1943-1952), through the age of economic miracle and planning (1953-1968), the economic and financial crises (1969-1990) and the last decade before the birth of the European single currency (1990-2000). The second section discusses catholic presence and organization within some of the leading social and economic categories; the third section describes some aspects of the catholic contribution to economic theory and the reflection on the role of ethics in economics, economic policy, and social entrepreneurship.
