Abstract

The study analyses the development of industrial and mining suburbs in Europe, especially in Italy and Belgium. In particular, the research focuses on the issue of the workforce houses, investigating on the strategies put in place by companies, local governments and trade unions to create housing areas in proximity of plants and mines. The paper in particular uses the cases of industrial areas of Lombardy and Vallonia. Indeed, in these areas the industrial development and the companies’ growth created strong migratory flows of workforce and, with that, the need to house thousands of workers
