Abstract
This essay shows how heavily Hofmannsthal’s writing was influenced by Italian literature, particularly by Gabriele D’Annunzio and Alessandro Manzoni. The former influenced the Austrian poet in the very early period of his production according to their mutual decadent sensibility; but a more substantial affinity tied Hofmannsthal to the Italian novelist, for his concept of life as a universe of sociability as well as for his considerations about the literary and philosophical concept of irony. This essay also explores through a rich unpublished documentation the familiar Italian and Milanese heritage of the poet, which may explain that affinity.
