Abstract

Both positive and unfavourable agronomic aspects of the use of composted urban waste (UW) in agriculture are here reviewed. The heavy metal content in compost is particularly pointed out; their toxic effects are considered with respect to soil properties which influence metal mobility and plant uptake. A discussion on the metal accumulation patterns in plants and animals focuses attention on the contamination risk trough the food chain.
