Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] Many disciplines - from philosophy to the arts, from the history of religions to medicine - have investigated the theme of suffering trying to explore its origins, meaning, cure. However, the topic of suffering has never been dealt with (at least in a systematic way), from sociological thinking. The reasons for this lacuna, writes Giarelli, can be attributed to various reasons, such as the difficulty in conceptualizing suffering (a concept considered too broad, generic and subjective), the fact of conceiving suffering as a purely personal event, characterized by "unspeakability and infeasibility" (p. 19) and, last but not least, the propensity, of neo-positivist matrix, shared by many scholars to consider sociology as a discipline that must maintain its own detachment from the object of study that has generated an attitude of marginalization towards those that expressed some form of suffering.
