Abstract
The essay seeks to ascertain whether the preponderant weight in the Roman cura attributed by 11th-century sources to Hildebrand is the result of an exaggeration or whether he really served as coordinator of the Roman reforming group. He then distinguishes the period prior to Gregory VII's election from that of the pontificate, noting that the weight of the collaborators in the latter years decreased dramatically and Gregory VII remained alone at the head of the Church.
