[Autom. eng. transl.] Over the years, the doctrine of the transmigration of souls has taken on an ever more decisive weight in Goethe's work. The poet's interest in this subject reflects the cultural mood of an entire epoch. This is demonstrated, among other things, by the fact that in 1780 a public debate on the transmigration of souls took place in Germany. This debate was the culmination of a confrontation that had long been latent in German literary and philosopher circles. It should also not be forgotten that the subject of metempsychosis played a significant role in ancient Greek and Latin philosophy - and therefore also in the education of most scholars who lived in Germany between the 18th and 19th centuries. Goethe's studies are a conclusive proof of this.
