God and the Flow of Time

Abstract

In this essay, we show that the way in which the relationship between God and the temporal reality is conceived depends on the metaphysics of time that is adopted. In particular, things change considerably if a static or dynamic metaphysics of time is adopted. No solution is free of problems and often the advantages of one solution are the problems of another. More generally, traditional theism has always insisted on the eternity of God and this has often led to think about temporal reality in a deeper way. By consequence, not only does philosophy of religion benefit from its interplay with the metaphysics of time and with temporal logic but, in turn, these disciplines make progress interacting with philosophy of religion.
