Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] It took many centuries of history, and many reforms, to give a structure to the school as we see it today: majestic buildings, scattered throughout the territory, with crowds of students entering and leaving at set times. But there is no doubt that, even without the most basic infrastructures (desks, blackboard, books, writing instruments, etc.), any school could only work because it has good teachers. Who are these men and women capable of managing such a widespread and important enterprise for society as a whole? Where do they get the motivation and skills to teach and how they live their profession? We often talk about teaching staff, but is it really possible to imagine teachers as a compact army, with the same spirit and with equal living and working conditions? In this volume we will try to answer these questions in reference to the teachers of the public education system in Italy. After a brief description of the demographic and quantitative scenario (how many teachers are there in Italy? How much do they earn? How do they make their career? Etc.) the dilemmas and critical phases that this delicate profession is going through, which is also a public function, are faced. also an art. Finally, the prospect of the new professionalism of the teacher will be opened, equipped with technical, moral and cognitive tools of the internet age, able to perceive changes and to adopt effective strategies to "stay" in the middle "between high and sometimes unreachable ideal models. the concrete everyday life of the classroom, accompanying the young generations in the jungle of circulating knowledge with seriousness (but also lightness).
