Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] Over the last few years, several complex financial instruments have been developed as a result of financial engineering. The aim of this work is to investigate the technical characteristics and contractual specificities of Exchange Traded Notes (Etn). Through the analysis of a case, it is shown how this kind of product is excessively complex for an investor who does not have specific skills. In particular, we propose the analysis of an Etn that replicates the performance of an underlying linked to the Vix volatility index: in this regard, it is shown that the performance of the ETN diverges significantly from the performance of the underlying, due to the peculiar structure assumed by the forward curve of the Vix.
