Abstract
Although deeply rooted in the XIX century, Giuseppe Toniolo’s approach to the industrial society had given a decisive contribution to the modernisation of Italian Catholics’ economic thought. His ethical approach to the themes connected to the material progress of the most advanced societies, characterized by the defence of entrepreneurial freedom, of market liberties and of freedom of work, anticipated the evolution of XX century Catholics’ social action.
