Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] Among the matters falling within the remit of the new ministry for worship, the institutional decree of 1802 listed pious institutions and public charitable establishments. The reorganization of the pious areas, carried out by Bovara between 1802 and 1807 after a wide survey of the current situation, confirms in him the temperament of the versatile and expert politician able to standardize the variety of pre-existing local traditions with a firm hand. In this sector too, the means of eliminating abuses, which were intertwined around the vast discretion of the ruling classes, was identified by him in a new social order, in the role of "honest and zealous" men, which the Napoleonic system set in the foreground also in other areas of associated life, from local administrations to parishes of popular patronage for the choice of the pastor
