Giovanni Botero is a most famous protagonist of the debate about Reason of State which crossed Europe in XVI and XVII century, as well as a multifaceted writer. A full, though syntethic, account of his contribution to that debate, is here offered, with a specific focus on the juridical aspects of that issue.
