This paper includes a short survey of Valerius Maximus' reception from Pliny the Elder to the Late Antiquity anmdf a new hypothesis on ianuarius Nepotianus' Epitome: Nepotianus was a pagan rhetor connected with the Nicomachi-Symmachi, whose aim was to enhance pagan virtues and miracles (like Iulius Obsequens' Liber prodigiorum) in opposition to Christian hagiography
