Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] In the literary field, Gian Battista Corniani tackled various topics, producing works of literary criticism of discontinuous value, but starting a historiography that takes literary phenomena into consideration in close connection with those who produce them. In the book I Centuries of Literature limits itself to tracing the history of individual personalities in relation to the civil, cultural and spiritual life of the period, collecting material relating to individual authors without a precise critical method. Nevertheless, the work of Corniani remains of some importance due to the presence of a historical conscience that allows the author to formulate less summary judgments than those of Tiraboschi and already precursors of those of Ugoni and Scalvini.
