Abstract
An account of the myth of Italian wisdom in order to outline the criterion of truth which the De antiquissima (1710) recalls in opposition to Decartes’s method of clear and distinct perceptions. Such criterion is the universal etymology of every language conceived as the specific and distinctive method of metaphysic, physic and moral sciences. The research of a criterion of truth culminates in the elaboration of a metaphysic, which will be completely reformulated in the Scienza nuova.
