[Autom. eng. transl.] Plant genetics, mother of all genetics, has strongly influenced scienti c modern thought thanks to the intuitions of G. Mendel who recognized, through the analysis of the phenotype, new genetic variants due to recombination. From the simple genetic analysis of the uniformity of hybrids and segregation, studies conducted on plants have contributed substantially to the discovery of genetic phenomena such as heterosis, transposons, RNAi, structure and regulation of gene expression, etc. Thus the basic knowledge has been deepened, and more and more advanced technologies have been developed with applications in all sectors of human activity, for the improvement of health and the environment and to guarantee food production for future generations.
