Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The essay illustrates the various functions that the musical element assumed in the Jesuit popular missions: during the official presentation of the missionaries, sacred chant served to add prestige and solemnity to the ceremony, in Christian doctrine it had eminently didactic and mnemonic purposes, in penitential processions it served to confer greater dramatic emphasis on the event, while in general it aimed to involve the faithful and make them feel involved in the rites and celebrations that took place during the mission.
