Abstract

The right to freedom of religion, recognized as fundamental in all instruments guaranteeing human rights, is increasingly the object of attention in contemporary pluricultural societies. The practice of national authorities and international institutions dealing with this fundamental right has therefore evolved considerably over time. The volume aims at promoting updated knowledge about this right, taking specifically into consideration the international legal order and the law of the European Union, for both of them represent essential points of reference for the State policies in these domains. The volume includes the following contributions: 1. Freedom of religion in the framework of universal instruments for the protection of human rights and under the European Convention (M. Spatti) - 2. The freedom to wear religious clothing in the case-law of the European Court of Human Rights (M. Ferri) - 3. The protection of the rights of religious groups in the framework of the European Convention on Human Rights (C. Morini) - 4. The contribution of extra-European human rights protection systems in the implementation of religious freedom, between convergence and inherent peculiarities (M. La Manna) - 5. Religion in the EU legal order: the pluralistic model and the case-law of the Court of Justice (A. Santini) - 6. The autonomy of European Churches and religious organizations in light of the recent case-law of the Court of Justice of the European Union (L. De Pasqual) - 7. The dialogue between the European Union and religious organizations (L. Lionello)
