Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] The liberal formulation of religious freedom and expression is in fact based to a significant extent on the distinction between the public and private spheres. The clear separation of these two spheres within the personal experience constitutes, to a large extent, the foundation of the possibility for citizens to reconcile their being authentically religious - or non-religious - with respect for the laws of the State, even where between the two sides there is discrepancy or even conflict. However, this separation between public and private is not without difficulties, exceptions and opacity. In fact, in spite of what the prevailing modern imaginaries have often sketched, the boundary between public and private is often nuanced and porous, in addition to being the object of different cultural interpretations which, inevitably, also significantly change the meaning and the layout.
