[Autom. eng. transl.] France has an administrative tradition based on a very centralized form of state. For a long time, legislation and the organization of public services did not work: the 2001 Loi Organique relative aux Lois de Finances replaced a law dating back to 1959 and remained in force for more than forty years. In reality, however, since 1989 France has begun a process of reform that has led it to completely renew and reposition the organization of its public services on new paradigms. The chapter illustrates the path of progressive diffusion of performance management in the French central administration.
