Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] Valeriano Castiglione, a Benedictine monk of the Cassinese Congregation, served the Savoy for almost forty years as a court historian and writer. Despite his devotion and his multiple works, he never succeeded in gaining recognition of his role as counselor, which was perhaps his true aspiration. Through some still little known details of his biography and his political thought, the essay recurses his "drama" and provides an explanation, tracing it not so much to the political context and to the court factions as to the error of perspective committed by Castiglione: while the Savoys proceeded towards the construction of a bureaucracy composed of officials selected outside the court, he presented himself and still acted as the Renaissance courtier, who had a "personal" relationship with the Prince. Complete the picture, the transcription of the unpublished Discourse on Maledicences, dedicated to Vittorio Amedeo I, and some letters.
