Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The absence of movement and the lack of regular physical activity are becoming one of the increasingly serious risk factors for safeguarding the health and well-being of the population. The development and the consequent expansion of technology have gradually made everyday life simpler: everything that once required hours of work and effort can now be achieved while sitting down, simply by pressing a button. Although movement is a fundamental organic function for man, unfortunately there are still few who dedicate their free time to physical exercise. A sedentary lifestyle is one of the causes that can be modified against the onset of cardiovascular and other chronic diseases, including diabetes mellitus, cancer, obesity, arterial hypertension, bone and joint problems (osteoporosis and osteoarthritis) and depression. For years now, doctors and scholars have argued that regular physical activity is the best defense against many discomforts, and that it is an excellent prevention against the risk of early death. 60 minutes of physical activity would be sufficient at a slow pace every day, such as walking or walking the dog, or 20-30 minutes of more intense activity, such as jogging or taking an aerobics class. You can get modest health benefits, moving in such a way as to burn 150 kcal per day, or 1000 kcal per week. This amount of physical activity would decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease by 50% and the risk of hypertension, diabetes mellitus and colon cancer by 30%. Thanks to the movement it develops and preserves the functionality of the apparatus, counteracting its premature aging. In addition, regular exercise should be considered as an excellent tool to help control body weight. Finally, it can be said that physical activity, the result of a conscious choice and constant habits, is able to create a sort of sense of physical and mental well-being, thus improving the quality of life.
