Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] We all lie and at the same time condemn the lie. But what is a lie and what makes it so? Starting from these questions, Lars Br. H. Svendsen investigates the role that lies play in everyday life, with particular attention to the ethical question, to understand why it is so wrong to lie and if there are cases in which it is legitimate to do so. We lie to ourselves, to friends, in love and in the family, breaking the relationship of trust on which our relationships are based. But what to do when we have to tell unpleasant truths? And are the so-called "white" lies forgivable? From the sphere of personal affections, the author then guides us in the social one, through the words of fundamental thinkers - from Plato to Machiavelli to Nietzsche, up to contemporaries such as Max Weber and Hannah Arendt - and, focusing in particular on the figure of Donald Trump , analyzes the use of lies in politics. A cultured and entertaining philosophical analysis of how to recognize lies, which helps us to extricate ourselves in the world and to accept a simple truth: it is necessary to assume that people are sincere, if we do not want to live a life based on mistrust of others and be unhappy.
