Abstract
The essay proposes a reading of the figure of Ferdinand Habsburg Lorraine, son of Maria Theresa of Habsburg and Francis Stephen of Lorraine, who became governor of Milan in 1771. Certainly his arrival in the Ambrosian capital introduced new elements of development and interest to the Milanese scene, not least the transformation of the city into a ‘capital city’. Ferdinand tried to reshape the office of governor, making it more incisive and less decorative, and was helped in this by a section of the local nobility who saw in his appointment the possibility of recovering the ground lost with Joseph II’s reforms.
