Abstract
This chapter presents an overview of the classical interpretative approaches to migration (macro-, micro- and meso-) and interethnic coexistence (multiculturalism, assimilation, etc.), which represent the long-term perspective of migration. It outlines the emergence of a family-focused approach to the analysis of migration, leading to identify different family configurations among migrants and a number of emerging issues, such as families reunited after migration (and the question of the second generations), transnational families (and families left behind), and families characterized by the presence of spouses of different ethnic and cultural origins (“mixed couples” as a workshop on the negotiation of differences).
