Abstract

Since the eighties, with the end of the industrial era, the city found themselves faced with a choice: invest in local development to face social and economic change, or to oppose the process and condem themselves to stagnation. The relocation of industries and the consequent economic restructuring have prompted the city to use local "cultural" resources - stories, legends, landscapes, spaces, traditions, creative energies, talents, etc. - to create economic prosperity, social and cultural development and make recognizable its competitive advantage over other territories. Hosting events such as festivals, exhibitions, fairs and sport events are key measures of this strategy. But what is the relationship between the development of a city and its ability to become a stage for major events? How cities create, shape, organize and promote an event and how this impacts on the urban fabric?
